Taper That!

Tapers can be used in a variety of ways in the piercing process. They are most often used to insert jewelry pieces, to gradually stretch piercings, and sometimes just because they look cool.

How Can I Use Piercing Tapers?

Threaded tapers can be used to connect to threaded jewelry, allowing for easy insertion in new piercings, or when expanding holes using threaded plugs and tunnels.

Straight tapers are tapers that come with two o-rings to hold the taper in place. Straight tapers can be used to size-up gradually, and while the o-rings, which are tiny rubber rings hold the taper in place.

Circular tapers can be used to gradually expand holes as well, but as their name suggests, they are a circular or “c” shaped piece rather than a long straight spike. They are also held in place by o-rings.

Insertion tapers are not threaded, but instead have a slight indentation on the back allowing the jewelry you pierce with to either fit inside the thin walls of the taper, or in some models, to butt up to the taper. Both versions are designed to make the insertion of jewelry into the piercing seamless and comfortable for your clients.

Keep in mind that insertion tapers that allow for the jewelry to fit inside of the taper are measured INTERNALLY, so that the jewelry you choose will fit inside. For example, if you are going to use a 14g piece of jewelry that would like to fit inside the insertion taper, you would want to choose item TIT in 14G, and that would mean that the measurement inside the walls of the insertion cavity would measure 14g, and the external diameter of those walls would be slightly larger.

Tapers in Steel or Tapers in Titanium? What’s the difference?

Metal Mafia offers tapers in both steel and titanium. If you choose tapers that are titanium, you can choose to have them anodized to any color you would like. Many piercers designate one color per size to make piercing set-up easier. For example, you might choose to have all your 14g titanium tapers anodized pink, all your 16g blue, and so on, to help organize your supplies.
